NCI EventThe National Cancer Institute (NCI) Technology Transfer Center is hosting a webinar on an exciting new technology that could revolutionize MRI metabolic imaging. Scheduled for Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 11:00 AM ET, this free webinar will introduce a novel Signal Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE) catalyst technology, co-developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and NCI. This innovation promises to enhance MRI imaging capabilities, enabling groundbreaking advancements in the detection and monitoring of cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and traumatic brain injury.

Transforming MRI Imaging with SABRE Catalyst Technology

Hyperpolarized MRI offers a non-invasive, non-radioactive method for real-time visualization of in vivo metabolic processes, unlocking insights into disease mechanisms that were previously inaccessible. The new SABRE catalyst technology dramatically improves this process. By using a recyclable perfluorinated Iridium SABRE catalyst, researchers can hyperpolarize imaging agents like [1-13C]pyruvate more efficiently and cost-effectively. This method shortens production time to just 15 minutes, compared to several hours with traditional methods, while significantly reducing costs. Moreover, the catalyst is reusable for at least 10 cycles, making it an environmentally friendly and scalable option for advancing metabolic imaging.

The resulting hyperpolarized imaging agents can be used to study diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disorders, metabolic diseases, and neurologic conditions, and to monitor therapeutic responses in real time—without the need for metals like gadolinium or iron.

Event Highlights

During the webinar, attendees will hear directly from Dr. Rolf Swenson, co-inventor of the SABRE catalyst technology. The presentation will cover:

  • The novel SABRE catalyst and its capabilities
  • The production of hyperpolarized imaging agents and their applications
  • Opportunities for research co-development and licensing of this groundbreaking technology

Researchers, healthcare professionals, and potential licensees are encouraged to attend to learn more about this transformative approach to MRI metabolic imaging.
