Four Baltimore-area companies share $800K in loans from Anne Arundel casino fund – Baltimore Business Journal

Four Baltimore-area technology startups have received a total of $800,000 in loans from Anne Arundel County.

The county’s VOLT Fund, managed by the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp., supports entrepreneurs and pre-revenue startups to help them reach key milestones, attract additional funding and grow locally. The fund receives $1.8 million a year from the state’s Small, Minority and Women-Owned Business Investment Fund, which is funded through video lottery revenue from Maryland casinos.

So far, the Gaithersburg vaccine maker (NASDAQ: NVAX) has been mum about whether it would join other Greater Washington companies in the race to stop the Zika virus. The disease has caused concern among worldwide health leaders in recent months because of a suspected connection to birth defects in newborns and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults.

Bacteria-Laden Mosquitoes May Be the Cheapest Way to Stop Dengue and Zika

The health foundation of Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates is in talks with Latin American governments and scientists over plans to spread hundreds of millions of mosquitoes that are unable to transmit dengue fever and Zika virus.

The discussions include a proposal by scientists in Medellín, Colombia, to spend $16 million to try to protect the city’s three million people with the new breed of mosquitoes.
