Mentors, Advisors, and Peers (MAPs) programs offer opportunity for WIB members to meet other women who are in various stages of their career, are on different paths, and have a range of backgrounds, in a professional yet social atmosphere. Through MAPs, members share experiences and give advice on everything from personal challenges to professional topics. With this MAPs networking event, we’re bringing these circles together to network and share best practices. What tactics work for running a successful mentoring group? How do you get the most out of your MAPs group? How do groups grow and change, and do they need to? We look forward to seeing everyone there!

This is a members-only event focused on existing MAPs groups and WIB members who are interested in learning more about MAPs groups.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County defeated nine other finalist teams to win the 2017 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition to become National Champions. The championship was held in San Antonio, Texas, April 13-15, with the top 10 college and university teams from across the nation facing off to protect a network against constant cyber attacks.

Veni Vidi Vici. It translates into English as “I came, I saw, I conquered.” It also happens to be the name chosen by one of the winners of the recently held America’s Got Regulatory Science Talent Competition.

FDA recognizes that young scientists are our future. Now in its fifth year, America’s Got Regulatory Science Talent is one of a number of initiatives FDA supports to encourage young scientists to pursue careers in the rapidly maturing field of regulatory science.

As my syringe presses against the skin and muscle surrounding a patient’s knee joint, I feel a brief resistance. A gentle increase in pressure, though, and the needle pops through, ready to inject the drug. But this isn’t a real patient or syringe – they’re both virtual.

I am taking part in a training simulation created by a London-based firm called FundamentalVR. It allows me to view my patient in virtual reality and perform knee surgery with a stylus that gives haptic feedback, so I can feel the different layers of tissue. The simulation is designed for surgeons who must learn how to properly inject a drug during surgery to provide post-operative pain relief.

The Maryland Tech Council (MTC), Maryland’s largest technology trade association, has announced the finalists for its 29th Annual Industry Awards. Winners will be revealed at a celebration on June 1, 2017 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. The event, which draws more than 800 executives from the technology and life science communities, celebrates individuals and companies that have made a significant impact in their sectors.

Strand Life Sciences, a bioinformatics company, introduced liquid biopsy test portfolio called Strand LB that helps in highly sensitive detection of tumour traces from a simple blood draw.

While tumours are usually assessed through invasive biopsies or through radioactive scans, this test will ensure early and precise indication of tumour presence, cancer recurrence, and response to therapy, said the company in a statement.

Inova Health System’s Translational Medicine Institute (ITMI) is betting big on personalized and precision medicine.

And the Falls Church, Virginia, organization is hiring to ensure that bet pays off. Current openings include clinical researchers and genetics counselors, but they’re also looking for a senior cloud systems engineer, a bioinformatics software engineer and a personalized medicine data architect to support researchers and clinicians.
