Richard Bendis

President & CEO

Mr. Bendis is a distinguished and successful entrepreneur, corporate executive, venture capitalist, investment banker, innovation based economic development (IBED) leader, international speaker and consultant in innovation and economy building.

Mr. Bendis currently serves as the founding President and CEO of BioHealth Innovation Inc., a Central Maryland innovation intermediary focused on accelerating the growth of commercially relevant research from universities, Federal Labs and entrepreneurs focused in the biohealth industry.

He is also Founder, President and CEO of Innovation America (IA), a Global Innovation Intermediary focused on accelerating the growth of the entrepreneurial innovation economy in America.

Ethan Byler

Director, Innovation Programs

Ethan Byler has spent his career supporting entrepreneurial growth as a practitioner in innovation-based economic development at a biomedical research institute and technology accelerator, an economic development consulting firm and at a global engineering professional society. Most recently, he was the Manager of Global Development at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) where he managed programs that impact ASME’s development of technology-based solutions that target emerging markets and managing other new business models at the organization

Ethan was the Business Manager of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center of Bucks County, the Institute for Hepatitis & Virus Research, and was the Coordinator of the Keystone Innovation Zone program there. He led business development, fundraising, grant application, technology transfer, and management of the overall programming and business operations for the campus focused on translational biomedical research. Ethan has also worked as a consultant focused on county to national level technology-based economic development strategies for a consulting firm in Washington, DC,

Ethan holds a Master’s Degree from the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania and a BA from the University of Charleston.

Ethan and his wife Kara live in North Bethesda with their daughter Sophia.  They are active “foodies” that enjoy cooking and spending time with family.

Ethan Byler

Todd Chappell

Entrepreneur-in-Residence, NIH-OTT 

Todd Chappell is currently an Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) at the NIH. As the first EIR at NIH, he will assist the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) in the evaluation of existing technologies, provide an entrepreneurial perspective to OTT in its evaluation of new licensing proposals from start-up companies, advise OTT on opportunities for new ventures based on NIH/Food & Drug Administration (FDA) technologies, assist with developmental strategies, and mentor scientists to help ensure their research becomes commercially valuable.

From 2009 to early 2012, Todd was Vice President of Operations for Shape Pharmaceuticals, where he oversaw all day-to-day operations involved in the development of a novel HDAC inhibitor for Cutaneous-T-Cell-Lymphoma. Prior to that, he was at CombinatoRx Inc. for eight years and served as Director of New Products. In that role, he led at team of analysts overseeing all early-stage product development and strategy across a range of therapeutic areas including inflammation, infectious disease, dermatology, oncology, and ophthalmology.

Todd directly oversaw the advancement of three programs from assay stage into phase II human clinical studies, and was co-inventor on 10 product patents. He was also responsible for product in-licensing and alliance management for discovery-stage collaborations. Todd holds a B.S. from University of California at Los Angeles and a M.B.A. from Boston University.

Todd Chappell

Ram Aiyar

Entrepreneur-in-Residence, NHLBI

Ram has spent his career in healthcare with two years of healthcare investment experience, over five years of experience in pharmaceutical research and development, and three years of commercial and entrepreneurial experience.

He started his career at Johnson & Johnson in the oncology and immunology team where he contributed to the identification and development of many novel large molecular compounds. He later moved his focus to developing and identifying stratified medicine solutions for pulmonary and autoimmune diseases as part of the immunology biomarkers team. Ram was a recipient of the Philip B. Hofmann award for "Outstanding Achievement in the field of Research and Development," the most prestigious award for a scientist at J&J for work on erythropoietin receptor agonists.

Ram continued his career as an investment professional at Sofinnova Partners, a healthcare venture capital firm based in Paris where he was responsible for identifying, building and supporting biotech and medtech start-ups. In his most current role, he helped identify and define the strategic objectives and operational plan of FlowMetric Inc, a niche CRO providing state of the art flow cytometry based research and clinical services.

Ram's doctoral research used a combination of experimental and statistical methods to differentiate the mechanism of action of three different erythropoietin agonists. Ram also completed an investment banking internship at J.P. Morgan (London) in the Healthcare Advisory group. His doctoral research combined with experience at J&J has led to the filing of several international patents and over 20 peer reviewed articles.

Ram received his M.B.A. from INSEAD, a Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Drexel University and a B.E. from Mumbai University.

Ram Aiyar

Ken Malone

Entrepreneur-in-Residence, University of Maryland Ventures

Dr. Ken Malone joined BHI in 2013 as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence located at University of Maryland Ventures. He has built his career on creating economic value from science. Whether it was developing new business lines for global corporations or spinning out new ventures from universities, Malone has engaged in the commercialization of hundreds of new products in advanced materials and life sciences.

After a productive career with large corporations and during a stint with a research intensive university, Malone recognized the need for creative business finance and flexible business structures to convert science into economic value during its earliest stages. In 2005 he founded what is now Early Charm Ventures, LLC to address the need. Through Early Charm, Malone has provided his services to over a dozen early stage ventures while co-founding and/or being an officer of five advanced materials and life science start-ups.

Richard Moore

Entrepreneur-in-Residence, BD Diagnostics

Dr. Moore previously served as the Chief Scientific Officer for OpGen, Inc. In that role, Dr. Moore provided leadership over multiple R&D functions, and led the company's Scientific and Clinical Advisory Boards. Prior to that, he spent 12 years at BD Diagnostics holding various positions, most recently as R&D Director, Systems Integration and Advanced Technology. Dr. Moore received his B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. He also received his M.D. and Ph.D. from University of Maryland, Baltimore.

George Jiang

Chinese-American Entrepreneur-in-Residence

Dr. Jiang is the first Chinese-American Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR). He will lead in the assessment of biomedical technologies and product research and development (R&D) in both the USA and China markets, build partnership in life science hubs between these two countries, oversee primary and secondary research activities, and provide strategic recommendations for collaboration and commercialization.

George was a subject matter expert for infectious disease/regenerative medicine in a large consulting firm, providing strategic and technical consulting services to federal government agencies and private industry clients. Prior to that, he served as a Principle Investigator for malaria vaccine immunology in the Henry M. Jackson Foundation. He also conducted vaccine R&D studies, and cytokine gene therapy research with different animal models in Texas State Department of Health. He completed his postdoctoral training in the University of Texas Health Science System and UCLA Harbor Medical Center.

Dr. Jiang received his M.D. from China specialized in hematology and a MBA from the Johns Hopkins University. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

George Jiang

Amanda Wilson

Director, Finance and Human Resources

Amanda Wilson joined BHI in June of 2012. Her primary responsibilities include maintaining BHI's financial processes, including issuing financial statements, writing checks, processing expense reports, ensuring adherence to GAAP accounting principles and monitoring organizational budget performance. Amanda is also responsible for the human resources functions at BHI. She distributes human resources policies to the BHI staff, updates policies as needed and ensures employee access to the BHI benefits package. Amanda also plays a significant role in the employee recruitment and screening process.

Prior to becoming the Director of Finance and Human Resources, Amanda held the title of Operations Manager. Before joining BHI, Amanda worked at the City of Rockville's economic development agency in a similar capacity. Amanda began her career as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer in Central New York.

Amanda holds an M.B.A. from The George Washington University and a B.A. from Oswego State University.

Amanda is originally from Buffalo, New York, and is a Sabres fan.

Renée Enright

Executive Administrator

Renée Enright joined BHI in February of 2012 as the Office Manager/Executive Administrator.  She is responsible for supporting the CEO, interacting with industry and academic institution leaders, as well as local, state, and federal government officials and staff. Renée has over 15 years of operational, business, and scientific recruiting experience in a variety of industries. Prior to joining BHI, she was the Recruiting Manager at MT Resource, serving as the contract recruiter for several local bioscience companies. She was also the Scientific Staffing Manager for Randstad, where she developed scientific staffing business from ground zero for the company.

Renée also held various positions at Life Technologies, Inc. including Plant Manager, Asia Pacific Business Manager and Technical Buyer/Distribution Supervisor. She started her career as a Supplier Development Engineer/Buyer for General Motors Corporation.Renée holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from GMI Engineering and Management Institute and has a Micro-MBA Certificate from the State University of NY at Buffalo.

Renée lives in North Potomac, MD with her husband, Bill and two young children. She spends her free time cheering on her children's sports teams, cooking, golfing and supporting the PTA as the treasurer.

Adam Hafez

IT Manager

Adam Hafez joined BHI in January of 2012 as a Student Intern. He provides support to BHI in the areas of IT, database maintenance, website updates, presentation preparation, and graphics design. Adam has been particularly helpful during BHI’s beginning stages and played an integral part in setting up BHI’s new presence. Adam holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Maryland.

Jamie Forrester

Student Intern

Jamie Forrester joined BHI in October 2013 as a Student Intern. He provides support and assistance to the Operations Manager, Amanda Wilson and performs any associated tasks in the areas of accounting, finance and human resources. Jamie was also a member of the planning committee for the 8th Annual PostDoc Conference and Career Fair. Jamie is currently a student at the University of Maryland at College Park actively pursuing a degree in Sociology.

Vikas Malaiya

Associate Intern

Vikas Malaiya joined BHI in 2014 as an Associate Intern for the Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. He provides intellectual property review and commercial analyses of biomedical technologies, and does sourcing, diligence and pitch coaching for business development.

He started his career at Bristol-Myers Squibb where he was part of a targeted biologics drug discovery team in Waltham, Massachusetts, that discovered and developed several novel therapies that progressed into clinical trials. He has also worked in education development in rural India and with the NGO Pratham in New Delhi.

Vikas holds a B.S. in Molecular Biology from University of Colorado at Boulder and will be attending INSEAD Business School.

Indrani Dasgupta

Research Intern

Indrani Dasgupta joined BHI in October 2013 as a research intern for the Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. She performs scientific and market research on life science technologies and assists in evaluating the intellectual property landscape for early stage inventions. Indrani was formerly a postdoc in University of Maryland School of Medicine, studying the structure function relation of a protein associated with Alzheimer 's disease. She is a patent agent and holds a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from University of Houston.

Arielle Dolegui

Business & Research Analyst

Arielle Dolegui joined BHI in 2013 as the Business & Research Analyst. She is responsible for supporting the Director of Innovation Programs and performs research related to healthcare systems; diseases; information technology and other business information. Arielle has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical, biomedical and non-for-profit industries. She is very involved in her community and is currently engaged in fundraising activities for the National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI), as well as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Eric Norman

EIR Program Consultant

Eric Norman joined BHI in October 2012 as an assistant to the Entrepreneur-in-Residence. Prior to BHI, Eric received training in technology transfer at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Technology Transfer (OTT), where he assisted in the negotiations and drafting of licensing agreements aimed at commercializing early stage technologies. Since joining BHI he has been an invaluable liaison between BHI and NIH. Eric facilitates meetings between NIH scientists and BHI consultants, coordinates with NIH technology transfer community to identify potential technologies, screens potential technologies, and participates in the evaluation of early stage technologies. Eric holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Morgan State University and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh.
